Since 1987, International Studies Abroad (ISA) has provided college students in the United States and Canada the opportunity to explore the world. A primary objective of all ISA programs is to facilitate the learning and development of students. We rely on host universities to provide quality instruction in the classroom, but ISA is the main facilitator of learning outside of the classroom.
Locations
Salamanca, Spain (pop. 156,000) is described by many as the ideal study abroad location because of the outstanding academic possibilities at the Universidad de Salamanca, assorted cultural opportunities, and proximity to the capital city of Madrid. It is one of the most magnificent renaissance cities in all of Europe. Salamanca was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and a European City of Culture in 2002. The city is small enough to navigate by foot, allowing you to gain an intimate understanding of the local landscape and culture. Sandstone colored buildings fill the city, earning Salamanca the nickname of La Ciudad Dorada (The Golden City). This program accommodates students at all levels of Spanish proficiency. Beginning level courses focus solely on language acquisition while intermediate, advanced, and superior level courses expand on Spanish culture, in addition to grammar. Classes are taught in Spanish by host university faculty and students are in class with international students.

Housing
ISA students stay in homestays or student residences with international and Spanish students. All ISA housing options are either within walking distance or conveniently located near public transportation. Travel times to the various university buildings generally range between 15 and 40 minutes depending on housing and class locations. For more information please visit the ISA Salamanca webpage.
The cost of housing will be included in the invoice that ISA sends to Appalachian and students will be billed through their Appalachian term bill.
Financial
Program Costs
Students participating on ISA programs will be billed through Appalachian the ISA program cost. This will replace the Appalachian tuition & fees for the term they are abroad. In addition to the ISA costs students will also be responsible for submitting a $200 OIED Program Development Fee upon acceptance by the Education Abroad Office. The fee payment confirms your spot and is non-refundable.

1Personal expenses includes but is not limited to: toiletries, cell phone, emergency funds, laundry, basic travel and entertainment, etc.
2US citizens participating on the Language & Culture program for 3 months or less will not need a visa.
3Students are encouraged to maintain a US based health insurance plan while abroad (to exempt out of AppState insurance students must follow the App exemption process - proving that they have insurance coverage for the entirety of the semester.
4Personal Travel and Spending amounts will vary by student and will be affected by how often a student goes out, travels, and the items they purchase.

Students are encouraged to start planning for their study abroad program costs well in advance. Please use the Student Financial Planning Worksheet to help estimate your anticipated expenses and your anticipated financial resources. When planning for estimated additional costs students are encouraged to research currency conversion rates.

ISA Scholarships
ISA offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for students.
OIED Scholarships
Each semester OIED offers a variety of different scholarship opportunities for students. Scholarship awards range from $250 to $2000.
Benjamin A Gilman Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program application is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
Fund for Education Abroad
Applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad and those destined for non-traditional locations are given preference, in an effort to make the demographics of U.S. undergraduates studying abroad reflect the rich diversity of the U.S. population.

Academics
An intensive language program open to students of all language levels. Beginning level courses focus solely on language acquisition while intermediate, advanced, and superior level courses expand on Spanish culture in addition to grammar. All students are required to take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival in Salamanca. This exam will determine your language level and course selections are not confirmed until the results are available. Classmates are international students from all over the world. All classes are taught by Universidad de Salamanca faculty in the Cursos Internacionales department. Students can participate in an Intensive Month program before this program begins for an extra cost. Please contact ISA for more details.

All students are expected to maintain at least the equivalent of a full time course load according to Appalachian State and the host university while abroad (whichever is greater). Students participating on the ISA Salamanca program will normally take a total of 6-7 credits per summer session. How to Apply
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and some programs may fill up before the listed deadline. Each year applications for Fall, Spring, and Summer will open up on August 1st. Once open the deadline will be listed below and an Apply Now button will be available at the top and bottom of this page. Most applications will have a 2 part application process so students are encouraged to complete their OIED application well before the listed deadline.
Students applying to an ISA program should complete the
ISA application while also completing the Appalachian application.
