Study for a Semester or Year in Japan!

Institution

Toyo University was founded in 1887 as a school of philosophy. At its inception, the university was popular with the public as a small, specialized school in oriental philosophy and liberal arts. Today it consists of 11 graduate schools, a law school and 11 undergraduate schools located on four campuses in the greater Tokyo area. University enrollment is approximately 30,000 undergraduate and 950 graduate students.

Location

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, has a population of approximately 13.3 million. The city is the epitome of today's fast-paced urban lifestyle but still retains the quieter aspects of old traditions. It is easily recognized for its large-scale buildings as well as its subtle details — intensity and calm — a fusion that truly makes it a fascinating destination. Toyo University's Hakusan campus exemplifies this fusion through its central location in the center of the city but also in one of the fascinating traditional districts.

Students are able to apply for the ISEP Exchange or ISEP Direct program. The major different between these two programs is how fees are structure. On the ISEP Exchange program students pay Appalachian tuition and fees plus the ISEP Full Exchange Fee. On the ISEP Direct program students will be billed the ISEP Direct program fee. Non-resident students should check to see if the ISEP Direct cost will be less than Appalachian out of state tuition rates.

Academic Calendar

Academics

Toyo University offers 10 credits of intense Japanese language and culture courses per semester. The goal of the courses is to help the exchange students increase their proficiency to a level that allows them to pursue their academic interests and enjoy campus life to the fullest. In addition students are able to select an additional two elective courses. For more information please visit the ISEP Toyo webpage.

All students are expected to maintain at least the equivalent of a full time course load according to Appalachian State and the host university while abroad (whichever is greater). Students participating on the ISEP program will be required to enroll in 12-18 credits per semester. For more information about study abroad enrollment policies, credit approval, and credit and grade conversions please visit the Academics section of our website.
